Hitting Bottom

Each piece of my life
has a voice clamoring
for first action.
Some days they all
come shouting in
deafening me,
crushing me under
the weight of hurled indictments.

They are ham-fisted thuds
crashing into my face
from behind my eyes,
the band that tightens
across my brow,
the weight that
strains my back. I spin to
move away from one
only to smack into another.

I am dizzy, weary from
constantly whirling, moving aimlessly,
fruitlessly, unable to
protect me from my
actions and words unwelcome
that just    keep    coming.

Until finally,
mercifully,
I collapse.
To the ground.
It’s quiet then—
my first peace.

Breathing deeply
slowly,
it becomes clear to me:
there is only
up
from here.

111 Days of Fun

My First Two Blogging Challenges of 2011

I have accepted a few blogging challenges, two so far. The challenges I chose call on me to stretch myself out of my comfort zone—far out of my comfort zone. They are both blogging challenges that compel me to write more regularly, at least twice a week.

My reason in choosing these is to get motivated to post more than I ordinarily do, and more consistently over 16 weeks. More than that, I chose to challenge myself for two of my blogs, (now three). I’m curious to know how long I can sustain this pace, which is why I’ve taken to these challenges so readily. Besides, I want to make these changes in my routine permanent. This is a good starter.

Challenge 1

The shorter challenge is for my work blog, The Word ‘Mage Blog, where I took up with a challenge that started at the beginning of the month. It is for 25 posts to be written through the end of the month. I won’t meet that challenge necessarily but I will keep going with it.

Challenge 2

The longer challenge is for this blog. I only have to post two entries weekly. However, this challenge started, yesterday, 1.11.11 and continues for 111 days. Details are on Writing Spirit Blog.

To participate as a group, @WritingSpirit has set up a Twitter hash mark group, #SHINEonline, where we can tweet our participating posts. I already started my fun times here. I hope you’ll join in the relaxed fun.

I was originally going to stick with the two blogs that I started with. Since then, I’ve decided to extend this second challenge to my other blogs so that I can continue with frequent posting. I’m going to try to keep it to a minimum of 2 each for the balance of the 111 days.

This post is part of my #SHINEonline challenge commitment for 2 posts weekly; 2 of 2 for this week.

Prodded to Wake

Early winter morning
before the sun comes up,
the cold presses through
the panes of my
closed window,
presses through the bone
of my flesh and skin
covered skull,
pressing icy extensions
in through my brain
to my sinuses.

It can’t survive
just standing in the warmed air
in the room around me
or under my blankets with me.

I’m drawn out
from my cozy dreams
to chilled observance of
this path the cold does take
into me
by way of
my head, the window.

I’m awake.

Acorn Smash

I remember a time, tho’ long ago
when stepping on an acorn was play
that could roll me off balance.
I could stumble dizzyingly,
happily unsure of my footing
as I reveled in the freedom,
soaking in all the sensations I could hold.
Somehow wistfully appreciative
of a time I knew I could not remain in.

That time long ago saw me pounds lighter
feet shorter, burdens fewer, decades younger,
regrets unthought of as every possibility
lay at my feet. Myriad red carpets covered
the wide expanse of the golden road into my future,
all present for me to choose one or many.

I thought about that today
on my walk to a neighborhood store
as I came upon a fallen acorn.
No fear of rolling off it today
I stepped on it and felt
the acorn smash.

My Christmas New Year Holiday

25
Cold, bright Christmas day
dressed in gratitude for my
family and faith.

******
26
Cold, clear winter day
and I’m quiet entreating
my voice to return.

******
27
Saints versus Falcons
Monday night game threatened my
throat’s recovery.

******
28
Sinuses clearing
throat pain abating nicely;
my strength’s returning.

******
29
Mostly back to me
voice hollow cavernous like
the winter night’s wind.

******
30
I woke this morning
fearful my throat un-mended
imagined big setbacks.

31
I’m ready to shed
leaves of this long year; ready
for new year’s flowering.

New Year Wishes for 2011

Closing the year of twenty ten
we make ready to begin again
working out the nuances and moves
to get the best from each tomorrow.

May you succeed at every turn
maintain bridges not burn
ones you may need
to help others cross with you.

Enjoy your celebration
putting this year well behind you.
Enjoy your anticipation
receiving the fruit
of your labor in the year ahead of you.

It’s New Year’s Eve and I’m hoping that everyone is having a great time. I’m hoping that everyone is looking forward to a better year than the greatest year they may have had this year, or ever.
