All pieces in place,
hours of practice and drills,
the race is mine to win.
But look,
it took very long
to get to the start.
It seems I’m out of step.
They pose a threat to my success,
these new runners,
even with their
wild, unstructured strategies.
Perhaps it’s not
a foregone conclusion
that the victory is
mine for the taking.
I’m good with that too.
Meeting challenges
is sweet spice
to dress
already delicious winnings.
