Less Painful, Sort Of
I see myself working
in IT fixing computers
installing applications
training people on
newly implemented programs.
It didn’t happen quite that way
because I chose a route less painful.
Hand-picked by the IT director
to be his assistant,
one roadblock propped up
after another until the
biggest blow of all,
some number cruncher
eliminated the position.
It was a singular opportunity
we both still wanted me
so I learned on the job
trained in courses when I could,
to help sort of unofficially.
But none of that
would have been in my way
had I made the bold choice
to conquer calculus
and major in computer science.
I’m reminded of the choice I didn’t make
whenever I think of switching occupations.
